Your ability to provide your services through your corporation is your right as a Canadian.
When you do so, you get the benefits available to a small business in Canada plus you get to charge HST and retain a portion of it. Your rate as a contractor is commonly much higher than what you would be paid as an employee. You also have options of when, where, and what you work on. This combination of benefits creates a great opportunity that many people in preference to a full-time role as an employee.
Unfortunately, this right is under threat from politicians that do not know and appreciate the value of the contracting community. Politicians are actively being lobbied by well-funded unions who perceive contracting as a threat to their base. We need your help to build a voice for our community and show our politicians that:
- The contracting community is significant;
- The contracting community is not a workforce of vulnerable low paid people; and
- And that knowledge workers, like yourself, appreciate the benefits of working as a contractor.
If we are not able to demonstrate to our elected leaders that independent contracting is the future of work, we run the risk of them following international models that have virtually legislated away any benefits to being an independent contractor.
In the US, the majority of Knowledge Workers are referred to as W2’s (a W2 is the equivalent to Canada’s T4/employee). They do not enjoy the same rights and privileges that you do in Canada.
Our Call to action:
If the pandemic has shown us anything, it is that Canadians value freedom and flexibility in our work. We need to make sure that our government acknowledges that independent contracting is a growing portion of the Canadian economy and that knowledge workers are not a vulnerable workforce that have been forced into a contract role.
We are conducting a survey to give you a chance to amplify your voice. This survey will be shared with Ontario’s ministry of finance, the ministry of labour and others.
