Labour disruptions impact at the Canada Revenue Agency

Introduction

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) strike in 2023 caused some disruptions and delays in tax services. However, it’s important to stay informed and proactive during these situations to ensure a smooth tax filing process. In this blog post, we will address common questions, provide updates on the CRA strike, and offer tips to help you navigate tax season effectively.

CRA Strike

Key Information: Represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), over 35,000 CRA employees went on strike as of April 19, 2023. Their primary demands included higher wages and increased job security as their contract was up for renewal. However, a tentative deal has been reached between PSAC and the federal government, and union members returned to work on May 4, 2023.

Impact on Tax Returns and Benefits

During the strike, certain services, such as contacting the CRA call centres and processing tax returns and benefits, experienced delays. This meant longer wait times for assistance and potential delays in receiving tax refunds, especially for those who filed by paper. However, it’s worth noting that tax returns were still due on May 1, 2023, and the CRA did not announce any extension to the filing deadline.
